Hidden gourmet spot in Harajuku! Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu Harajuku Meiji-dori

Harajuku is widely known for Takeshita Street and trendy café hopping, but did you know that it’s also home to a restaurant serving exquisite Gyukatsu? That place is none other than Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu Harajuku Meiji-dori.

Conveniently located just a few minutes’ walk from both Tokyo Metro Meiji-Jingumae Station and JR Harajuku Station, this restaurant is an ideal stop for a delicious meal during your sightseeing or shopping in the area.

A stylish and inviting restaurant

The restaurant is located along Meiji-dori, stands out with its sophisticated Japanese-modern exterior. It seamlessly blends Harajuku’s trendy vibe with traditional Japanese aesthetics, creating an inviting space where tourists can feel comfortable dropping in.

I ordered the popular cutlet set at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu Harajuku Meiji-dori!

When I opened the menu, the first thing that caught my eye was the “Japanese Black Beef Superior Sirloin Cutlet Set.” The luxurious Gyukatsu made with Japanese Black Beef was already enticing, but the word “superior” made it even more intriguing.

Japanese Black Beef is one of Japan’s finest, known for its exceptional quality. Among its cuts, sirloin offers the best balance of rich sweetness and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness.

I was moved by the overwhelming visuals

The moment the set was brought to the table, I was at a loss for words. Each piece of Gyukatsu, coated in a glistening golden batter, was meticulously arranged—so beautiful that I couldn’t resist taking a photo.

Fresh cabbage, steaming rice, and fragrant red miso(Akadashi) soup were on the side. Just by looking at it, I was sure it was going to be delicious!

The first bite is a taste that will blow your mind

First, take a bite of the Gyukatsu as it is, without any toppings. The crispy batter gives way to the rich, savory flavor of the Japanese Black Beef.

The meat is perfectly rare and so tender that it melts in your mouth. The sweetness of the fat is exquisite, enhancing the deep, concentrated flavor of the beef.

A whole new world of Gyukatsu unfolds with a variety of topping arrangements

Next, we tried wasabi. The refreshing spiciness enhances the sweetness of the fat and further accentuates the flavor of the meat. Because it is simple, you can enjoy the taste of the real ingredients.

We also tried Gyukatsu sauce with ground sesame available on the table! Sprinkling ground sesame over the special sauce, made with plenty of vegetables, adds depth to the flavor.

The accompanying curry sauce and soft-boiled egg with dashi stock complement both the Gyukatsu and rice perfectly, making each bite irresistible.

Adding plenty of sauce enhances the flavor, ensuring you enjoy a new taste experience until the very last bite.”

The fun of being able to customize the doneness

Another great feature is the small grill provided at each table. I first enjoyed the Gyukatsu rare, but lightly searing it added a fragrant aroma and brought out a different depth of flavor.

Being able to cook it to your preference is a unique highlight of Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu, making the experience even more special.”

Akadashi is often served at authentic Japanese restaurants and kappo restaurants, but rarely at chain restaurants. However, at Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu, it is included in the set meal.

Moreover, you can enjoy unlimited servings of cabbage, Akadashi soup, and rice, allowing you to fully indulge in a satisfying Japanese dining experience.

“Oshikatsu” with Oikatsu

In addition to the set meal, Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu offers an additional half-serving of Gyukatsu, known as ‘Oikatsu.’ This luxurious option lets you enjoy more of your favorite cut, whether it’s sirloin, loin, or tongue.

If the set meal isn’t quite enough or if you’d like to share with others, adding Oikatsu will surely enhance your dining experience.
